Customer Service - Residential If Your Lights Go Out Starting New Service Energy Conservation Tips Safety To report street light problems or request an additional streetlight, call 562-8568. Traffic Lights: please report burned out bulbs or malfunctioning signals to 562-8568. If your lights go out . . . Even the most reliable power service can be interrupted occasionally. If you and your neighbors lights are out or you are not able to restore power by replacing a fuse or resetting the circuit breaker, call us at 562-8568 M-F 8am-5pm or 562-8575 after hours. Restoring your power is very important to us and will always receive top priority. Plan ahead for emergencies. Put matches, candles, flashlight and batteries where they are easily found in the dark. Also, store non-perishable food, a first-aid kit and a battery-powered radio where others can find them. If you experience an electrical power outage, first check to see if your neighbor's lights are out too. If not, 1) turn off the power at the main switch; 2) check for a blown fuse, 3) replace any blown fuse with a new fuse of the same ampere rating (never put a penny or aluminum foil in a fuse box to replace a fuse - you could cause a fire). If you have circuit breakers, find the one that has interrupted the power flow and turn it completely to the off position and then fully on. After you have either replaced a fuse or reset the circuit breaker, restore the power at the main switch. If your lights go out, please remember: Keep freezer and refrigerator doors closed. Turn off your electric range for safety when service is restored. Leave a light on to show when power resumes. When power resumes, restock emergency supplies. Starting New Service The service initiation form is posted online for your convenience. Should you have any questions or problems, call Franklin Power and Light at 562-8568. Energy Conservation Tips • Keep the thermostat on your heating system at the lowest comfortable setting. If you are going to be away for several days, turn the thermostat to a lower setting, but not to "Off." A sudden frigid snap could cause your pipes to freeze and burst. • Check filters at least monthly and clean or change them as needed. Dirty filters can increase operating costs by 20 percent and can damage equipment. •Caulk any space around windows and other places where air leaks to prevent cold drafts and heat escape. • Use exhaust fans sparingly in winter. Heat and moisture from bathing and cooking contribute heat to your home. Don't use the oven to heat a room. • If your home has a fireplace, be sure the damper fits tightly, and close it when the fireplace is not in use. Add a glass fireplace screen. • Cover bare floors. Carpeting adds to comfort and heat retention, especially if there is little or no floor insulation. • If possible, remove window air conditioning units in winter. Otherwise, install an inexpensive air conditioner cover to stop drafts coming through the vents. • Use ceiling fans in winter to distribute heat around the room. Reverse the direction of the fan blades from that used for summer cooling. • Use insulated or heavy curtains on windows facing the north side of the house. Keep curtains and shades closed at night and on cloudy days. • For heat pump users, set the thermostat to a constant setting and leave it there, and make sure drapes and furniture are not blocking air registers or returns. In the kitchen and elsewhere: • Keep the oven, the refrigerator and other appliances clean. Clean equipment runs more efficiently. • Use microwave ovens whenever possible. They use less than half the power of a conventional oven. • Defrost frozen food by placing it in the refrigerator overnight. This helps cool the refrigerator so it won't run as much. • Whenever possible, wash full loads in the dishwasher and clothes washing machine, rather than partial loads. • Wrap your water heater with an insulation blanket, available at hardware stores. It can help you save about $20 a year on energy costs. • Take short showers instead of tub baths and install a flow restrictor or energy-saving shower head. • Look for EnergyGuide labels on most major home appliances. The more efficient models save you money in the long run. Safety It's difficult to imagine our lives without electricity. Many of the simple pleasures we take for granted, from the lights we work and study by, to the ice we use to chill a cold drink, to the hot shower that gets us ready for the day. All of these activities and many more would be impossible, were it not for our energy sources and the ability to harness them and bring them to our homes. Electricity is an integral part of our daily lives. But we must never forget that the same power that makes our lives easier can cause serious injury or death if not used properly and cautiously. Play it Safe! Treat all fallen power lines as if they are electrified. It's important for you and your family to know that it's impossible to tell a live line by sight. Live wires don't necessarily twist, writhe, snap or spark. But they do kill. So please, don't touch the line or anything that's touching it. Warn others to stay away and call Franklin Municipal Power and Light immediately at 562-8568 to report. Play it Safe! Teach children never to climb utility poles or touch electrical equipment. The only thing at the top of transmission towers and utility poles are live power lines that can kill if you get too close to them. Falls from towers and poles can also injure or kill. Other electrical equipment such as substations, padmount transformers and transformer platforms can be just as dangerous. Please, teach children not to touch, shoot or throw objects at this equipment. Teach them that a friend who dares them to do any of these things is not a friend. Play it Safe! When working or playing outside, always be aware of how close you are to a power line. Be especially careful when handling large equipment, long poles or tall items, to make sure that they do not make contact with power lines. Teach children never to place ladders or climb trees near power lines. And never try to adjust the antennas on the roof. Play it Safe! Teach the people you love that water and electricity don't mix. In summer, more than ever, kids are in and out of water. Warn all children that touching an electrical appliance when wet can cause death or severe injury. Teach them not to use electrical appliances (radio or hair dryers, etc.) near the toilet sink, tub, shower or pool. To protect babies and small children, make certain that childproof safety caps are placed in electrical outlets. Play it Safe! Teach children to fly kites in open fields away from power lines. Kite strings can conduct electricity, so a child whose kite touches a power line can be killed or badly hurt. Teach children that if the kite drifts near a power line to release the kite. Teach them not to try to retrieve a kite that gets tangled in a power line. And never use anything metal on the kite or string. If you see a kite tangled in a power line, call Franklin Municipal Power and Light at 562-8568. Play it Safe! Before you dig in the yard, call for the free Miss Utility Locator Service. In spring and summer, people in and around Franklin begin outdoor projects. And many of these (gardening, adding fences, etc.) require digging. But electric lines can cause electrocution if struck by a shovel or other tool. So please, call 1-800-552-7001 before digging. Spring and summer is also remodeling time, but remember: the job isn't done until all electrical outlets are covered with plates. Play it Safe! Call Franklin Municipal Power and Light to trim trees that are close to power lines. If tree limbs in your yard are growing close to power lines, don't try to trim them yourself, Call 562-8568 and Franklin Municipal Power and Light will trim them for you. Free. And, if you're doing any kind of work around power lines, remember that you call Franklin Municipal Power and Light for temporary line clearance at 562-8568. back to top |
